Portugal Predicted Starting Line-Up

Which of Portugal\'s lead men will be put up against France in EURO 2016 final?

It has come as a huge surprise to many that Portugal have managed to reach the final of Euro 2016, but by hook or by crook Fernando Santos’ side have found a way to win even when not playing so well.

He will have a few selection dilemmas ahead of the final though: does he keep faith with the eleven who won so handsomely against Wales in the semi-finals, or will he reintroduce rugged defender Pepe and midfield workhorse William Carvalho following injury and suspension?

Goalkeeper: Rui Patricio

An ever present between the sticks for Portugal in Euro 2016, Patricio is a clam presence who has dealt with everything thrown at him so far (bar the 3-3 aberration against Hungary). Expect the 28-year-old to be busy dealing with the likely wave after wave of France attacks in the final!

Defenders: Cedric, Pepe, Jose Fonte, Eliseu

Confirmed for the final are Southampton defensive duo Cedric Soares and Jose Fonte, who have been key parts of the successful Portugal rearguard.

Coach Santos will then need to decide whether to bring Pepe back into the heart of his defence in favour of Bruno Alves, who helped his side to a clean sheet against Wales while the Real Madrid man was out injured. Given his big game experience, we expect Pepe to come back into the side.

At left back, Santos will need to choose between the more attack-minded Guerreiro or the solid Eliseu. Expect the latter to get the nod to help deal with the likes of Griezmann and Pogba.

Midfield: Joao Mario, Danilo, Renato Sanches

Danilo was outstanding in the semi-final in his role as a midfield enforcer, and as such he has probably played his way into a final starting spot. His defensive knowhow will be required to help tame the French creative outlets.

Alongside him will be Joao Mario, who has started all of Portugal’s matches, and Renato Sanches, who is rowing in stature with each game in this competition.

Attack: Nani, Adrien Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo

We predict that Santos will go with his usual formulation in attack. Cristiano Ronaldo will be deployed as a central striker, with Nani pulling out to the right flank and Adrien Silva to the left.

Expect the experience of Ricardo Quaresma to be utilised at some point too.
